The BMW S1000RR is a race-oriented sport bike initially manufactured by BMW Motorrad to compete in the 2009 Superbike World Championship and is now in commercial production. It was unveiled in Munich back in April 2008 and is equipped with a 999 cc (61.0 cu in) four-cylinder engine that redlines at an impressive 14,200 rpm.
For the 2009 season, BMW produced 1,000 S1000RRs to meet World Superbike homologation requirements and later expanded production for public sale in 2010. The bike features a standard anti-lock braking system with optional electronic traction control. As of 2016, it boasts a wet weight of 204 kg (450 lb) and delivers a thrilling 148.4 kW (199.0 hp; 201.8 PS) at 13,500 rpm. With 133.6 kW (179.2 hp; 181.6 PS) to the rear wheel, it was hailed as the most potent motorcycle in its class on the dynamometer.
Launched in 2009, the BMW S1000RR quickly gained recognition as one of the best-equipped sportbikes in the 1000 cc category. Sporting a bore and stroke of 80.0 mm × 49.7 mm (3.1 in × 2.0 in), it also featured the largest bore in its class at the time. In 2013, while there were fewer updates compared to the previous year, BMW rolled out the HP4 variant, a track-focused iteration of the standard S1000RR.
The model was available in various race kit packages, ranging from the base claimed output of 144 kW (193 hp; 196 PS) up to an impressive claimed figure of 158 kW (212 hp; 215 PS). The HP4 introduced in 2013 came with additional electronic features like launch control and pit-mode, accessible from controls located on the handlebars. The following year, the 2014 S1000RR received minor updates and became the first to feature race-ABS as standard. Subtle modifications were made to the handlebars and fairings as well.
In a significant overhaul in 2015, the BMW S1000RR underwent notable changes, shedding around 4 kg (8.8 lb) of weight and adding an extra 4.4 kW (5.9 hp; 6.0 PS) to reach a claimed output of 148 kW (198 hp; 201 PS). The introduction of a new mechanism for moving outer shafts enhanced torque delivery by providing a more linear torque curve compared to its predecessor.
Noteworthy achievements on the track include Ayrton Badovini's dominant performance during the 2010 FIM Superstock 1000 Championship season aboard the S1000RR, as well as various riders using this model at the Isle of Man TT since its debut year. Michael Dunlop's victory at the superbike class race on a factory-prepared S1000RR entered by Hawk Racing marked a historic win for BMW after a lengthy hiatus.
